A technical manager and engineer of over 35 years’ experience with a broad range of clients, predominantly in outside broadcasting. I am highly respected and have developed long standing relationships with a number of key clients. Awarded an Emmy in 2004 as a key member of the edit maintenance team deploying over 45 edit systems for NBC’s coverage of the Athens Olympic Games.

Broadcast Technical Manager, Broadcast Engineer

Technical Manager

  • Working closely with the client to understand their requirements for technical facilities and staff
  • Derive a timetable for the use of facilities and a roster for crew
  • Liaise with venue staff to identify equipment and camera locations, perform a site survey if necessary for vehicle locations and cable access
  • Develop and provide technical planning sheets to ensure that facilities and crew are booked and on site and are aware of health and safety practises
  • Ensure that connectivity to transmission is established and that transmission fibre or satellite paths/uplinks work effectively
  • Check in with the client and crew throughout the event to identify potential issues at an early stage and mitigate their impact
  • Communicate with transmission staff before going ‘on air’ to ensure that signals are received and are of an acceptable technical quality
  • Monitor the programme throughout for any issues between the facility and transmission and coordinate with crew and transmission staff in order to re-establish any loss of signal occurring

Guarantee Engineer

  • Assist the technical manager and client in order to determine the best specification of equipment to achieve their goals
  • Test the supplied equipment is suitable for the job electronically and that all software versions are correct for the client’s needs and the required recordings or transmission
  • Work with the client to set up monitoring and workflows of supplied equipment and ensure that the facility infrastructure is built or programmed to allow the required workflow to take place
  • Monitor the facility throughout the event attempting to pre-empt any issues or client needs
  • In the event of failure, to provide a means of continuing by either work around or repair and diagnose equipment faults
  • Coordinate with engineers working on the event to establish signal flow between different parts of the facility and interoperability with equipment in other areas
  • Mentor younger and less experienced engineers, for example, to develop trainees to become stand-alone guarantee engineers
